Odo Owa Kingdom located in the Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. The town's rich cultural heritage is evident in its colorful festivals, such as the Are Festival and the New Yam Festival, which highlight local music, dance, and cuisine. The Odo-Owa people are very traditional, and they continue to practice their land's customs and traditions. Specifically, the king of Odo-Owa, who is the custodian of the land's culture and tradition, is mandated to observe special protocols such as not entering a room with a woman during the day, not eating certain foods, and not farming (the king engaging in farming is believed to bring bad luck to the land),not seeing a dead body, not seeing his children when they are born until they turn six months old and the most extreme of the protocols is that the king is forbidden from seeing his mother.
Once the king is enthroned, he can no longer set eyes on the mother not even her dead body. The reason for most of these rules cannot be explain but they have been passed from one generation to another. The present king of Odo-Owa kingdom King Joshua Adegbuyi Adeyemi, the Olota of Odo Owa has expressed his desire to change the order of things if his chiefs are willing to cooperate.
The king's ban from seeing his mother is a striking example of how tradition can shape people's lives. As the Odo Owa Kingdom continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these traditions adapt to the changing needs and values of its people. The Odo-Owa Kingdom's traditions provide a glimpse into the complexity of Nigerian cultures.
