There has been rumors that Black Friday originated from the period of slavery but the phrase "Black Friday" has a vague history. Currently it is linked with post-Thanksgiving shopping specials. Originally, the name "Black Friday" referred to the hectic traffic conditions in Philadelphia on the Friday after Thanksgiving, when hordes of shoppers traveled to the city for the Army-Navy football game and holiday shopping. Police officers adopted the term to describe the stressful day, which included an increased workload and traffic congestion. But retailers began redefining the phrase in the 1960s. They started to think of "Black Friday" as the time of year when stores go from losing money ("in the red") to making money ("in the black"). This favorable meaning persisted, and over time, the phrase came to be associated with the beginning of the holiday shopping season and the steep price cuts that merchants were offering.
Black Friday is becoming a worldwide shopping event, with businesses giving steep discounts on a variety of goods. Often characterized by long lineups, packed stores, and internet shopping frenzy, it's a day of extreme materialism.
